I wrote a reply to the local paper.
“Work by economist and parking expert Donald Shoup shows that when parking is easy to access and relatively cheap there is little motivation for people to adopt public transportation. Downtown Saskatoon has a huge number of parking lots and meter parking rates are below the national average, making riding the bus only slightly less expensive than parking. Parking tickets in Saskatoon are $10, only three times the cost a single bus fare.”
Political hot potato is right. Even my most “hippy” friends get mad when I talk about less available and more expensive parking. Too bad it’s a darn good idea for increasing public transit… which is supposed to the goal after all.
